Our Story

I'm Brett Jeanveau, an avid camper who does multiple trips a year in Ontario's wilderness. On one of those trips, I noticed something that most people just accept: my friend's blue barrel lid was completely destroyed from years of use as a cutting board. Plastic shavings in your food and the environment aren't ideal, and looking at the lid, the fix seemed pretty simple. It already had the perfect indentation for a cutting board! I figured someone must already be making one, but to my surprise, I couldn't find anything. It just made sense to me, so I went on to create Barrel Buddy.

Why I Made Barrel Buddy

Using your barrel lid as a cutting surface damages and weakens the lid, shortens its lifespan, introduces microplastics into your food, and adds unnecessary plastic contamination to the wilderness. I wanted a cutting surface that would keep my knife off the plastic. Barrel Buddy fits into the recessed lid of a standard blue camping barrel, giving you a hardwood surface for preparing food.

Choose maple, cherry, or walnut. You can add an engraving with your camp name, a trip date, a design from our gallery, or your own artwork.

Every board is treated with our own food-safe finish, made in house with beeswax from local Canadian farms and food-grade mineral oil.

I sat on this idea for years before deciding to build it. Making it here in Canada mattered to me. We use Canadian hardwood and make our own finish with beeswax from local farms and food-grade mineral oil from Canadian manufacturers. Every Barrel Buddy is made in my hometown of Orangeville, Ontario.
